Brittany Wenger, 17, Wins Google Science Fair Grand Prize For Breast

Have you ever helped the hard-of-hearing listen to music? Or built a computer program to diagnose breast cancer? These kids have.

The five teenage winners of the second annual Google Science Fair were announced on Monday, according to Scientific American. Each of these brainy teens were chosen from among 30 finalists from around the world and were treated (along with the runners-up) to a gala held in an airplane hanger near the company's Palo Alto headquarters in California. (This is Google, after all.)

But the winners, of course, were awarded the best swag: Prizes included a college scholarships from Google for $25,000 or $50,000, trips to scientific hotspots like CERN and Fermilab, and (perhaps best of all), trophies made out of Lego bricks.

What did these brainiacs do to win the admiration of one of the best tech companies in the world? Read about each of they're projects below.

BRITTANY WENGER FROM FLORIDA:

The Grand Prize winner of the science fair, for good reason, was a 17-year-old from Lakewood Ranch, Florida. Combining the fields of biology and computer science, Wenger wrote an app that helps doctors diagnose breast cancer, according to the description of her project on Google.

The type of computer program, called a "neural network," was designed by Wenger to mimic the human brain: Give it a massive amount of information (in this case, 7.6 million trials), and the artificial "brain" will learn to detect complex patterns and make diagnostic calls on breast cancer. Her program used data from "fine needle aspirates," a minimally invasive procedure that, unfortunately, is often one of the least precise diagnosis processes, according to Fox News. But Wenger is helping change that, as her program correctly identifies 99 percent of malignant tumors.

?I think it might be hospital ready," she told WWSB. "I'd love to get different data from doctors. Right now, I have 700 test samples.?

JONAH KOHN FROM CALIFORNIA:

For this eight grader from San Diegan, who won the 13- to 14-year-old category, it all started with a bite on his guitar. "Last year, when I wanted to play guitar with one of my friends, I realized it was much too loud in the classroom to hear the guitar," Kohn said in a YouTube video. "But if you put your teeth on the top of the guitar, then you can hear it no matter how loud it is around you."

Kohn saw implications for the hearing-impaired. For his science-fair project, he wanted to show that the experience of music could be improved for the hard-of-hearing through tactile sound.

Filtering songs down to different frequency ranges and applying those vibrations to different parts of the body (such as fingertips), Kohn showed that the listening experience of people with cochlear implants could be improved by 95 percent, based on tests of 12 individuals with hearing loss.

"I thought it was a very inspiring idea," Kohn told KPBS. "I thought it could help a massive amount of people."

IVAN HERVIAS RODRIGUEZ, MARCOS OCHOA, SERGIO PASCUAL FROM SPAIN:

For the winning project in the 15- to 16-year-old category, this trio of young scientists form Logro?o, Spain documented the microbes and other nasty things living in the fresh water on northeaster Spain.

Collecting hundreds of samples over more than three years, according to their project description, they documented the presence of microbes found in over 60 fresh water sites, establishing fresh water quality for the entire valley of the Ebro River, mapped out below. (Watch them describe their project in Spanish in a YouTube video here.)

"They went back to a very ancient tradition in natural sciences, which is sampling the real world, cataloguing what you find, and then analyzing it to try to interpret what the implications are,? Vint Cerf, Google's chief Internet evangelist, told Scientific American of their project.

Following last week?s massacre at a movie theater in Colo., President Obama has offered words of healing and condolence, including a trip to the state Sunday to meet with families and survivors. Never in any of the president?s or his administration's public statements has there been a suggestion that he would use the incident to advocate for tougher guns laws.

In fact, to the dismay of gun-control supporters, Team Obama has gone out of its way to affirm the president?s support of gun rights since the Colorado tragedy. When asked Sunday whether Mr. Obama might propose new policies affecting access to guns, White House press secretary Jay Carney sounded more like a spokesman for the National Rifle Association (NRA) than for a Democratic president.

?He believes we need to take steps that protect Second Amendment rights of the American people but that ensure that we are not allowing weapons into the hands of individuals who should not, by existing law, obtain those weapons,? Mr. Carney told reporters on Air Force One en route to Colorado.

But gun-rights advocates are undeterred. At the NRA?s special website GunBaNObama.com, there is a message the 4-million-member NRA has been promoting since before Obama took office: ?Obama would be the most anti-gun president in American history.??

The evidence all comes from his record pre-presidency, including a statement chiding then-President George W. Bush for not pushing to renew a ban on assault weapons and another opposing the carrying of concealed weapons. ?

During the 2008 campaign, there was perhaps no greater gaffe by Obama than his secretly recorded comment at a San Francisco fundraiser in which he said that people in small-town Pennsylvania, wracked by job losses, ?get bitter? and ?cling to guns or religion.?

Now the argument by gun-rights advocates is this: If Obama is reelected, he will have no more elections to worry about, and then he will show his true colors on guns. This was the message promoted by NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre at the Conservative Political Action Conference last February.

?All that first-term lip service to gun owners is just part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment in his second term,? Mr. LaPierre said to thunderous applause.

In political terms, the timing of the Colorado massacre could hardly have been worse for Obama, says Richard Feldman, a former NRA lobbyist and president of the Independent Firearm Owners Association.

European Union widens sanctions against Syria

LONDON -- With the bloody uprising against the regime of President Bashar Assad now at a ?critical juncture,? the European Union announced Monday that it was slapping sanctions on more Syrian individuals and organizations and stepping up enforcement of its 14-month-old arms embargo.

Starting Tuesday, the EU?s 27-member nations will stop and search any ship or aircraft in their ports, airports and territorial waters if there is reasonable suspicion that the vessels are transporting weapons to Syria. Any item found that could aid Syrian security forces ?must be seized.?

?The EU is deeply concerned about the recent intensification of violence, including in Damascus, which demonstrates the urgent need for a political transition that would meet the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people and bring back stability in Syria,? EU foreign ministers said in a statement following?a meeting in Brussels.

Also Tuesday, the list of Syrians under economic sanction will be expanded to include 26 more people and three entities associated with the government crackdown. Their assets will be frozen, and the individuals will be banned from traveling to the EU.

The added names, to be published Tuesday, constitute the 17th time that Europe has widened its sanctions regarding Syria. In all, 155 people and 52 organizations have been targeted.

The new measures come amid escalating bloodshed between the government and rebel fighters, who scored a stunning coup last week by assassinating four senior officials of Assad?s inner circle. The increased violence engulfing Damascus, the capital, has led some analysts to believe that the endgame in the long-running conflict could be near.

The EU warned of wider regional instability as a result of the battle for control of Syria, which is flanked by Turkey, Iran, Iraq and other Middle Eastern nations. European diplomats reaffirmed their support for a peace plan put forward by Kofi Annan, the United Nations special envoy, but that plan looks increasingly irrelevant.

1) They have someone close, family or good friend, that would have thrown it for them but decided to do it for themselves or

2) You are known to your friends as its "Its all about meeeeeeeeeeeeeee" kinda person and threw it for yourself...lol
