Steve Jones out as "X Factor" host (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES, Jan 30 (TheWrap.com) ? Forget "The X Factor" -- Steve Jones is now experiencing the "ex-factor." As in, he's now the ex-host of the show.

Welsh television presenter Jones -- who hosted the Fox singing competition during his its first season -- broke the news on his Twitter account Monday.

"I wont be hosting next seasons XFactor which is a shame but I cant complain as I've had a great time," Jones wrote. "Good luck to everyone on the show."

Fox confirmed Jones' departure to TheWrap, but did not provide any information about a possible replacement for Jones.

Rumbling about Jones' departure began to emerge in December, when British newspaper the Daily Mirror reported that there were plans to reconfigure the show without Jones. At the time, Jones' publicist dismissed the report.

ECB's Makuch sees some recession risks: report (Reuters)

BRATISLAVA (Reuters) ? The euro zone could fall back into recession this year, an ECB Governing Council member said on Monday, adding the bank's non-standard measures were a significant funding and confidence boost.

A surprise upturn in the euro zone's service sector this month raised hopes the region may escape recession in 2012, even though the broader economy outside Germany is still struggling to gain traction.

The single currency area was likely to avoid a slip into a "deep recession," but will probably wallow in a mild recession until the second half of this year, according to a Reuters survey from January.

The European Central Bank (ECB), which pumped 489 billion euros into the financial system in December in its first-ever offering of three-year loans to help banks' funding strains amid the European sovereign debt crisis, will do so again next month.

"The banks' significant need in the first three-year operation shows that ECB's non-standard measures provide a significant contribution for financing of banks, supporting financial conditions and confidence," Jozef Makuch, who also heads the Slovak central bank, told daily Hospodarske Noviny in an interview.

Makuch warned the banks' dependency on the ECB short-term funding was rising, adding financing problems could hurt loan supply and have negative impacts on real economies.

"The market is still not functioning, we see some opening of markets with unsecured securities, but we are at the beginning of this process and hope it will continue," Makuch said.

Makuch said the ECB's bond-buying program, aimed to ease borrowing stress of debt-troubled countries like Italy, was neither automatic, nor without limit.

"Governments in the euro zone must cut excessive deficits and, in time, reach structurally balanced or surplus budgets. Countries at risk must fix slides in consolidation swiftly," Makuch said.

EU leaders will meet on Monday to sign off on a permanent rescue fund for the bloc and are expected to agree on a balanced budget rule in national legislation, with unresolved problems in Greece casting a shadow on the discussions.

GIGLIO, Italy (AP) ? The cruise ship that capsized off Italy's coast will take up to 10 months to remove, officials said Sunday, as rough seas off the Tuscan coast forced the suspension of recovery operations.

Officials called off both the start of operations to remove of 500,000 gallons of fuel and the search for people still missing after determining the Costa Concordia had moved four centimeters (an inch and a half) over six hours, coupled with waves of more than one meter (three feet).

A 17th body, identified as Peruvian crew member Erika Soria Molina, was found Saturday. Sixteen crew and passengers remain listed as missing, with one body recovered from the ship not yet identified.

Officials have virtually ruled out finding anyone alive more than two weeks after the Costa Concordia hit a reef, but were reluctant to give a final death toll for the Jan. 13 disaster. The crash happened when the captain deviated from his planned route, creating a huge gash that capsized the ship. More than 4,200 people were on board.

"Our first goal was to find people alive," Franco Gabrielli, the national civil protection official in charge of the operation, told a daily briefing. "Now we have a single, big goal, and that is that this does not translate into an environmental disaster."

University of Florence professor Riccardo Fanti said the ship's movements could either be caused by the ship settling on its own weight, slipping deeper into the seabed, or both. He also could not rule out the ship's sliding along the seabed.

Gabrielli noted that the body of a man recovered from the ship remains unidentified, despite efforts to obtain DNA samples from all of the missing, meaning that officials cannot preclude that the deceased is someone unknown to authorities. Costa has said that it runs strict procedures that would preclude the presence of any unregistered passengers.

Experts have said it would take 28 days to remove fuel from 15 tanks accounting for more than 80 percent of all fuel on board the ship. The next job would be to target the engine room, which contains nearly 350 cubic meters of diesel, fuel and other lubricants, Gabrielli said.

Only once the fuel is removed can work begin on removing the ship, either floating it in one piece or cutting it up and towing it away as a wreck. Costa has begun the process for taking bids for the recovery operation, a process that will take two months.

Gabrielli said the actual removal will take from seven to 10 months ? meaning that the wreck will be visible from the coast of the island of Giglio for the entire summer tourism season.

Residents of Giglio have been circulating a petition to demand that officials provide more information on how the full-scale operations can coexist with the important tourism season. At the moment, access to the port for private boats has been banned and all boats must stay at least one mile (1.6 kilometers) from the wrecked ship, affecting access to Giglio's only harbor for fishermen, scuba divers and private boat owners.

"We are really sorry, we would have preferred to save them all. But now other needs and other problems arise," said Franca Melils, a local business owner who is promoting a petition for the tourist season. "It's about us, who work and make a living exclusively from tourism. We don't have factories, we don't have anything else."

Smartphones drive record Samsung profit (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? Samsung Electronics Co posted a record $4.7 billion quarterly operating profit, driven by booming smartphone sales, and will spend $22 billion this year to boost production of chips and flat screens to pull further ahead of smaller rivals.

The South Korean firm, the world's top technology firm by revenue, is locked in breakneck competition with Apple Inc in the red-hot smartphone market. Apple, overtaken by Samsung in the third quarter, regained its crown as the world's biggest maker of smartphones in the fourth quarter, with record sales of 37.04 million iPhones.

Samsung didn't give its own sales volume data, but research firm Strategy Analytics put sales at 36.5 million smartphones in October-December, with 3rd-ranked Nokia on 19.6 million. Smartphones account for around 40 percent of all Samsung's handset shipments.

Samsung's telecoms business earned a record 2.64 trillion won ($2.35 billion) profit in October-December on increased sales of its flagship Galaxy smartphones.

"The battle of the two big smartphone powers, Apple versus Samsung, will go on," said Baik Jae-yer, fund manager at Korea Investment Management, which has around 9 percent of its portfolio in Samsung stock, according to end-September filings.

"The smartphone market will expand this year to more mid-and low-end models that are affordable to the wider public," Baik said. "Rather than focus on market share, I'd point out the strong contribution of Samsung's handset business to earnings growth and margins."

Samsung's October-December operating profit of 5.3 trillion won ($4.72 billion) was broadly in line with its earlier estimate and topped the previous record of 5 trillion won in the second quarter of 2010. Profit rose 76 percent from a year ago and 25 percent from the third quarter.

Samsung will increase spending this year by 9 percent to 25 trillion won - more than the GDP of leading cocoa producer Ivory Coast - with 15 trillion won going to the chips division, 6.6 trillion won to flat screens and the rest to boosting overseas production capacity and new research and development centers.

The record investment dwarfs a combined 1.3 trillion yen ($16.6 billion) that leading Japanese technology companies - Sony Corp, Toshiba Corp, Hitachi Ltd and Sharp Corp - have planned for the current year to end-March.

Samsung competes with Sony and LG Electronics Inc in televisions, Toshiba and Hynix in chips and LG Display in displays.

LG Display posted a narrower quarterly loss on Friday on demand from smartphone and tablet makers and as falling TV panel prices stabilize.

Samsung, which only entered the smartphone market in earnest in 2010 - some three years after the introduction of the iPhone with the touchscreen template - has adopted Apple's breakthrough concept probably better than others - and now seeks to offer the Apple experience at a better price, with better functionality.

Apple is Samsung's biggest client, buying mainly chips and displays, and the two firms are locked in a bruising patent battle in some 10 countries from the United States to Europe, Japan and Australia as they jostle for smartphone and tablet supremacy. In the latest legal skirmish, a German court ruled against Samsung in the second of three patent suits. The Mannheim court will decide on a third patent on March 2.

Apple, though, is streets ahead in profitability. It generates half its revenue from the iPhone, boasts a 37.4 percent operating margin, versus Samsung's 11 percent, and its $17.3 billion operating profit is almost four times what Samsung earned from selling phones, chips, flat screens and TVs combined.

"Apple had good sales, but it's very unlikely this will be a trend that will overwhelm Samsung later," said Kim Young-chan, analyst at Shinhan Investment & Securities, noting the likely boost to Apple sales from year-end promotions and the death of founder Steve Jobs.

"It's unlikely Samsung and Apple will fight over each other's market share, but they will eat up the market share of smaller companies like HTC and RIM," Kim said.

Samsung forecast its strong momentum in mobiles would continue this year and it aimed for 15 percent margins from the business, though it could come under renewed consumer pressure if and when Apple brings out next-generation iPads and iPhones.

"Samsung is playing catch-up with Apple in smartphone sales volume, but it's tougher to catch up in terms of margins," said Lee Yong-jik, fund manager at PineBridge Investment, which owns nearly 2.5 million Samsung shares, according to an end-November filing. Lee forecast Samsung would ship 150-170 million smartphones this year, from below 100 million last year.

"But price competition will intensify, putting its handset margins under pressure," added Kim.

CHIPS, FLAT SCREENS UNDER PRESSURE

Samsung faces headwinds this year, however, as global PC growth slows, likely denting sales of its core computer memory chips.

The company is looking to weather a squeeze on memory chips through new revenue sources such as mobile processing chips and high-end OLED displays. Rivals are increasingly turning to Samsung for components to power their tablets and smartphones.

Samsung makes mobile processors that power Apple's iPhone and iPad as well as its own Galaxy mobile products.

The company has warned that oversupply in dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips will continue this quarter due to slack computer sales, while demand for flat screens is likely to remain subdued at least until March.

Yet Samsung is the only profitable DRAM chipmaker and is likely to fare better than rivals, as it invests heavily to cut production costs with finer processing technology.

Shares in Samsung, also the world's top maker of memory chips and TVs, have risen by a fifth in the past three months and added 1.1 percent on Friday to a record high close of 1.125 million won. The KOSPI share index, up 3 percent in the past 3 months, rose 0.4 percent on Friday.

Apple doubles iPhone sales in 1Q

(AP) ? After uncharacteristically tepid sales in the July-to-September quarter, Apple came back with a vengeance in last three months of 2011, vastly exceeding analyst estimates and setting new records.

Apple Inc. on Tuesday said it sold 37 million iPhones in the quarter, double the figure of the previous quarter and more than twice as many as it sold in last year's holiday quarter.

The result may make Apple the world's largest maker of smartphones. Samsung Electronics, which held that position for most of last year, has said it expects to report shipping about 35 million smartphones in the October to December quarter.

October saw the launch of the iPhone 4S, and the addition of Sprint Nextel Corp. as an iPhone carrier in the U.S.

Apple said net income in the fiscal first quarter was $13.06 billion, or $13.87 per share. That was up 118 percent from $6 billion, or $6.43 per share, a year ago.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting earnings of $10.04 per share for the latest quarter, Apple's fiscal first.

Revenue was $46.33 billion, up 73 percent from a year ago. Analysts were expecting $38.9 billion.

The Cupertino, California, company shipped 15.4 million iPads in the quarter, again more than doubling sales over the same quarter last year.

Apple shares rose $33.03, or 7.9 percent, to $453.53 in extended trading, after the release of the results.

Doomed liner's captain trades blame with shipowners (Reuters)

GIGLIO, Italy (Reuters) ? The operators of the Costa Concordia faced questions over their share of the blame for the shipwreck, as divers recovered another body from the stricken liner on Sunday, bringing the known death toll to 13.

Captain Francesco Schettino is accused of steering the 290 meter-long cruise ship too close to shore while performing a maneuver known as a "salute" in which liners draw up very close to land to make a display.

Schettino, who is charged with multiple manslaughter and with abandoning ship before the evacuation of its 4,200 passengers and crew was complete, has told prosecutors he had been instructed to perform the maneuver by operator Costa Cruises.

Prosecutors say he steered the ship within 150 meters of the Tuscan island of Giglio, where it struck a rock that tore a large gash in its hull, causing it to keel over.

It is now lying on its side on an undersea ledge, half-submerged and in danger of sliding into deeper waters.

As the search continued into a ninth day, divers found the body of a woman on a submerged deck near the bow of the vessel, bringing the total number of known dead to 13, only eight of whom have been identified.

Costa Cruises have said they were not aware of any unsafe approaches so close to the shore and have suspended Schettino, saying he was responsible for the disaster.

According to transcripts of his hearing with investigators, Schettino has disputed that claim, saying Costa had insisted on the maneuver to please passengers and attract publicity.

"It was planned, we should have done it a week earlier but it was not possible because of bad weather," Schettino said.

"They insisted. They said: 'We do tourist navigation, we have to be seen, get publicity and greet the island'."

Italian newspapers have also published photographs of the Costa Concordia apparently performing the "salute" close to other ports including Syracuse in Sicily and the island of Procida, which is near Naples and Schettino's hometown of Meta di Sorrento.

Schettino also said the black box on board had been broken for two weeks and he had asked for it to be repaired, in vain.

In the hearing, Schettino insisted he had informed Costa's headquarters of the accident straight away, and his line of conduct had been approved by the company's marine operations director throughout a series of phone conversations.

He acknowledged, however, not raising the alarm with the coastguard promptly and delaying the evacuation order.

"You can't evacuate people on lifeboats and then, if the ship doesn't sink, say it was a joke. I don't want to create panic and have people die for nothing," he said.

Costa, a unit of Carnival Corp, the world's largest cruise line operator, says Schettino lied to the company and his own crew about the scale of the emergency.

Documents from his hearing with a judge say he had shown "incredible carelessness" and a "total inability to manage the successive phases of the emergency."

Taped conversations show ship's officers told coastguards who were alerted by passengers that the vessel had only had a power cut, even after those on board donned lifevests.

UNREGISTERED PASSENGERS?

Adding to the growing debate about the ship's safety standards, Franco Gabrielli - head of Italy's Civil Protection authority which is coordinating the rescue operations - said a number of unregistered passengers may have been on board.

Relatives of a missing Hungarian woman told authorities she was on the Costa Concordia with a member of the crew, but her name was not on the list of passengers, he said.

"In theory, there could be an unknown number of people who were on the ship and have not been reported missing because they were not registered," Gabrielli said.

Of the 13 bodies found, only 8 had been identified - four French nationals, an Italian, a Hungarian, a German and a Spaniard. At least 20 people are still unaccounted for.

Minor pollution from detergents and disinfectants aboard the shipwreck had been detected in the waters around the vessel but there was no sign that the heavy fuel in its tanks was leaking, Gabrielli said.

He said tests were being carried out daily on the waters around the ship and a nearby desalination plant that provides drinking water for the island's residents.

"The tests for toxic substances are negative so far," Gabrielli said. "The only significant elements detected, which luckily are not worrying yet, relate to ... detergents and disinfectants used on the ship, for the swimming pool or to clean the bathrooms for example."

Environment experts have warned that contamination of the pristine waters around Giglio, which is in the middle of a national marine park, is already under way and it is imperative to start recovering the fuel oil as soon as possible.

Red Cross: 'Many' dead, injured in Nigeria attacks

(AP) ? A coordinated series of bombings and attacks claimed by a radical Islamist sect left "many" dead and injured in northern Nigeria's largest city, a Nigerian Red Cross spokesman said Saturday, as gunfire still echoed around some areas of the sprawling city.

Soldiers and police officers swarmed over streets Saturday in Kano, a city of more than 9 million people that remains an important political and religious hub in Nigeria's Muslim north. While witnesses of Friday's attack said they saw seven dead bodies, the scope of the assault claimed by a sect known as Boko Haram also suggests the death toll could rise.

In a statement issued late Friday, federal police spokesman Olusola Amore said attackers targeted five police buildings, two immigration offices and the local headquarters of the State Security Service, Nigeria's secret police.

"The police have commenced investigation and therefore use this medium to call for calm among the residents of Kano as police are doing their best to bring the situation under control," Amore said. Police are "appealing to members of the public to come forward with information on the identity and location of these hoodlums. Information given will be treated with utmost confidentiality."

Amore could not be immediately reached for comment Saturday. Whether anyone trusts the police remains another matter as security agencies remain unable to stop the increasingly bloody sectarian attacks by Boko Haram on Nigeria's weak central government. Earlier this week, the police acknowledged the alleged mastermind of a Catholic church bombing at Christmas escaped custody, yet another embarrassment for security agencies amid the violence.

Nwakpa O. Nwakpa, a spokesman for the Nigerian Red Cross, said volunteers continued to offer first aid to the wounded, as well as evacuated those seriously injured to local hospitals. He said officials continued to collect corpses scattered around sites of the attacks.

Nwakpa said there had yet to be an estimate issued of toll of the attacks.

"From what they are saying, there are many involved, either wounded or dead," Nwakpa said.

The attacks began at 5 p.m. Friday, following afternoon prayers as workers began to leave their offices in the sprawling, dusty city, witnesses said.

A massive blast at a regional police headquarters shook cars miles (kilometers) away, an Associated Press reporter said. The blast came from a suicide car bomber who drove into the regional headquarters compound and detonated his explosives, deputy superintendent of police Aminu Ringim said. The explosion tore away the headquarters' roof and blew out the building's windows.

Inmates at the regional police headquarters fled amid gunfire, witnesses said.

State authorities declared a 24-hour curfew late Friday as residents hid inside their homes amid the fighting.

A Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in a message to journalists. He said the attack came as the state government refused to release Boko Haram members held by the police.

Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, a multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 510 killings last year alone, according to an AP count. So far this year, the group has been blamed for at least 76 killings, according to an AP count.

Boko Haram's targets have included both Muslims and Christians. However, the group has begun specifically targeting Christians after promising it will kill any Christians living in Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north. That has further inflamed religious and ethnic tensions in Nigeria, which has seen ethnic violence kill thousands in recent years.

Friday's attacks also could cause more unrest, as violence in Kano has set off attacks throughout the north in the past, including postelection violence in April that saw 800 people killed. Kano, an ancient city, remains important in the history of Islam in Nigeria and has important religious figures there even today.

Authorities previously believed they destroyed Boko Haram in 2009, after a riot and ensuing security crackdown in Nigeria's northeast killed 700 people, including its then-leader Mohammed Yusuf. The group began to re-emerge in 2010, as authorities blamed motorcycle-riding gunmen from the sect for targeted assassinations.

However, the sect's attacks have grown more complex and deadly over time. Boko Haram claimed responsibility for an August suicide car bombing that targeted the U.N. headquarters in the capital, killing 25 people and wounding more than 100. The sect killed at least 42 people during a series of attacks Christmas Day in Nigeria that included the bombing of a Catholic church outside the country's capital Abuja.

In a video released last week, Imam Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram's current leader, said the government could not handle attacks by the group.

Although President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from southern Nigeria, has declared emergency rule in some regions, the sect is blamed for almost daily attacks. Jonathan also has said he believes the sect has infiltrated security agencies and government offices in the country, though he has offered no evidence to back up the claim.

GE's Former Subprime Unit Probed For Possible Fraud

It's been three long years since the housing bubble cratered the economy and not a single top mortgage executive sits behind bars. But sometimes the wheels of justice just turn extra slowly.

The FBI and the Department of Justice are probing possible fraud at WMC Mortgage Corp., the former subprime mortgage division of General Electric, reports the Center for Public Integrity's Michael Hudson.

Federal authorities are "asking whether WMC used falsified paperwork, overstated borrowers' income and other tactics to push through questionable loans," reports Hudson. The unit was owned by GE from 2004 to 2007, when it was shut down as the housing bubble burst, leading to numerous civil lawsuits. Last fall, WMC and EquiFirst Corp. were sued in a Minneapolis federal court by a bank trustee over a $550 million pool of subprime mortgage-backed securities.

Though low-level mortgage fraudsters have been prosecuted, most top lenders and executives have evaded punishment. Last month, Bank of America agreed to a $335 million settlement with the Department of Justice over claims that its Countrywide Financial mortgage lending unit discriminated against Hispanic and African-American borrowers by pushing them into high-risk subprime loans.

But the bank has avoided prosecution and Countrywide founder Angelo Mozilo, the poster boy of the subprime debacle, settled securities fraud and insider trading charges with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2010 for $67.5 million -- a fraction of his estimated $600 million fortune.

In the case of WMC, former CEO Amy Brandt who helped lead its push into subprime mortgages, left in late 2006 to start up an indie rock label and to head up a private equity fund that invests in undervalued mortgage assets. Her short-lived successor as CEO, Laurent Broussard, now runs the retail cards unit at JPMorgan Chase.

A GE spokesman wrote in an email to HuffPost, "WMC is aware of multi-year investigations into participants across the subprime industry. WMC has been cooperating fully with such investigations. We have no reason to believe that WMC is currently a target of these investigations."

Spokesmen for the Justice Department and FBI declined comment.

FDA Risks Ire of Lawmakers With Missed Deadline

It's been a tough year for regulatory agencies, with Republican lawmakers complaining about "overregulation" and the massive federal deficit forcing steep budget cuts across the board.

So, it was curious to see the Food and Drug Administration risk even more pain by recently missing a crucial deadline that is sure to anger some members of Congress. The regulators have been arguing with medical device makers over the cost to speed up reviews of products such as hip implants and heart stents, which is paid for by industry -- with the FDA seeking $805 million and companies such as Johnson & Johnson preferring to pay $447 million. The agency missed a Jan. 15 deadline to submit a new agreement and probably won't have one by Feb. 15, when the House holds a hearing on the matter. If they miss the mark again, the FDA "will have the wrath of a bunch of exercised politicians on them who are running for re-election and want their pictures on TV that night," Ira Loss, senior health policy analyst at Washington Analysis, told Bloomberg News.

IRS Punishing Reformed Tax Evaders?

It's the IRS version of "no good deed goes unpunished."

The Internal Revenue Service has been promoting its voluntary disclosure program to help reduce the $385 billion owed by tax evaders who often hide assets overseas. But the program ends up hurting participants, potentially costing them more than if they continue to evade the IRS, National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson said in her annual report to Congress, reported Bloomberg.

High-Risk Chemical Plants Go Uninspected

The Department of Homeland Security's plans to inspect the 100 most high-risk chemical facilities in the country by the end of 2010 have been delayed due to the time needed to build a roster of inspectors, among other factors, according to a Congressional Research Service report. Only nine such Tier 1 facilities -- those deemed most at risk of a successful attack -- have been inspected as of last September and fewer than 50 have had their site security plans approved.

Citi, Morgan, RBC Hit For Muni Violations

Citigroup Global Markets, Morgan Stanley and RBC Capital Markets were among five firms fined a total of $220,000 for violations of municipal securities rules by the industry's self-regulatory body, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. The violations involved a failure to disclose material information -- such as a downgrade of a security by a ratings agency -- to customers and to report trades on a timely basis.

Katy Perry Unfollows Russell Brand on Twitter

Katy Perry is cutting ties with Russell Brand in EVERY WAY.

The 27-year-old pop singer has unfollowed her soon-to-be ex-husband on Twitter. As of Friday afternoon (a slow news Friday afternoon) Perry no longer follows Brad.

She is still one of the 78 people Brand subscribes to however.

Katy Perry and Russell

It's not surprising, given that Perry is only communicating with Brand, 36, via phone or email. "She's limiting those interactions," a source says of the couple.

"He's being so atrocious, she feels like she never really knew him."

Perry has been keeping Brand off her mind by focusing on her career: she performed in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Thursday, and she recently shot an Adidas ad.

"She doesn't want to look battered and have people for sorry for her," a source says. "She's very strong and confident and looking forward to the next chapter."

She's the most cheat-worthy star on the planet according to married guys, if she ever needs a little confidence boost. Or some amoral companionship.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) ? The ripple effect from Eastman Kodak's bankruptcy filing Thursday extends in many directions: Employees are bracing again for layoffs, retirees are fretting over health care coverage, and the photography pioneer's biggest creditors and stakeholders ? from movie studios and big-box retailers to the CEO ? are preparing to take the hit financially.

Mayor Tom Richards portrayed the decision to seek Chapter 11 reorganization as more of a psychological blow than an economic one to Rochester, where Kodak had been the engine of commerce for most of the company's 132 years. Its payroll in the medium-size city along Lake Ontario has slipped below 7,000 from a peak of 60,400 in 1983.

"We have a broader-based economy which is no longer dependent on one industry and one company," Richards said. "We're better off for it. Not what I wish this would happen, but it has happened, and we're just going to need to deal with it."

Kodak, the company that brought photography to the masses at the dawn of the 20th century and was known all over the world for its Brownie and Instamatic cameras and its yellow-and-red film boxes, was brought down first by Japanese competition and then by its inability to keep pace with the lightning shift from film to digital technology over the past decade.

The company said it has secured $950 million in financing from Citigroup and expects to continue operating and pay its employees while in bankruptcy.

In the meantime, Kodak will try to execute its plan for recovery. Since 2005, it has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into new lines of inkjet printers that are finally on the verge of turning a profit. Home photo printers, high-speed commercial inkjet presses, software and package printing are viewed as Kodak's new core.

Kodak's executives are hoping the printer, software and packaging businesses will more than double in size by 2013 and account by then for 25 percent of its revenue, or nearly $2 billion. The rest of the company's revenue comes mainly from traditional film, disposable cameras, photographic paper and chemicals.

Kodak got out of the business of making film cameras years ago, and its digital cameras are losing money.

The long-expected move to seek protection from its creditors was "a necessary step and the right thing to do for the future of Kodak," CEO Antonio Perez said.

One strength Kodak can take into a restructuring effort is its powerful brand name, said Eli Lehrer, who heads the nonprofit Heartland Institute's Center on Finance, Insurance and Real Estate in Washington. However, "that doesn't necessarily translate to people keeping their jobs, or stockholders keeping anything," Lehrer added.

Photographer Steve McCurry said the prospect that Kodak might soon fade into history is upsetting to huge numbers of Americans who remember not that long ago when its dominance in film photography was indisputable.

"That's just the nature of the world we live in," McCurry said. "We all die. Civilizations all die and famous corporations, too. Yeah, it's a sad occasion, but there's great, great respect for American brands that have endured for so long."

Best known for a Kodachrome portrait of a green-eyed Afghan refugee girl that landed on the cover of National Geographic in 1985, McCurry relied heavily on "probably the best color film ever made" for all but the last five years of a 36-year career and was entrusted with the very last spool of Kodachrome manufactured in 2009.

Veteran employees said they are scared the crisis could sink careers that somehow dodged so many previous cutbacks. And Kodak's 25,000 retirees in Rochester fear that already diminished health benefits could disappear altogether.

"Because it's unfunded and discretionary, Kodak can actually say tomorrow that we're going to drop health care," said Bob Volpe, who runs a Kodak retiree association with 3,000 members.

The company did not rule out the possibility of layoffs. It also resolved to "fairly resolve legacy liabilities," which suggests that it may try to cut its retiree health care costs, estimated at $132 million in 2011.

Kodak stock dropped in over-the-counter trading Thursday and closed at just 30 cents per share after the bankruptcy filing prompted the New York Stock Exchange to delist the securities. Perez alone owns 6 million shares.

As for the company's creditors, they could be forced by the courts under Chapter 11 to take less than they are owed.

Around Rochester, Kodak and other faded titans like Xerox Corp. and eyewear maker Bausch & Lomb are already overshadowed in the city's employer rankings by the University of Rochester and grocery-store chain Wegmans, which together employ around 34,000 people.

William Johnson Jr., a three-term mayor who served through 2005, said he shudders to think of Rochester without Kodak.

"If that corporate headquarters building all of a sudden goes dark, God, that will cast a huge shadow on this community," said Johnson, who now teaches public policy at Rochester Institute of Technology. "Even in its weakened state, Kodak still has tremendous influence over local affairs. And 7,000 jobs would be awfully hard to replace."

For many, job loss would mean missing bills

Mark Lennihan / AP

People wait to talk with potential employers at a job fair in New York last December.

By Allison Linn

The sudden loss of a job has become, if not commonplace over the last years, at least not very surprising.

And yet, many Americans remain unprepared for not having an income. A new survey from Country Financial finds that one-third of Americans would immediately fall behind on their bills if they lost a job and were left with no income.

That?s virtually the same result that Country Financial got the last time they asked the same question, in July of 2009.

The good news: About one-quarter of Americans are well-prepared for a job loss. The January survey found that 24 percent of respondents could weather five months without an income. That?s also virtually the same percentage as in July of 2009.

Country Financial conducts the survey of 3,000 people bi-monthly.

Although the economy is consistently adding more jobs than it is shedding, some workers continue to be let go. For example, Kraft Foods said this week that it would cut 1,600 jobs as it prepares to split its business in two.

If you do lose a job, the market remains tough. The median time it takes to find a new job is 21 weeks, or about five months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

There are currently about 13 million unemployed Americans who are looking for work, and the unemployment rate is at 8.5 percent.
