During the late evening last night, a fire in Gold Beach at the Soroptomist Building severed a communications cable that cut off most telephone and data service to parts of Gold Beach, including the Curry County Sheriff?s Office. Administrative non-emergency phone lines in to and out of the Sheriff?s Office were down most of the night, but are being restored by work crews that started work at 6 this morning. Emergency 911 service was restored quickly and transferred to the Brookings Police Department, where those calls will continue to be answered until redirected back to the Curry County Sheriff?s Office once adequate repairs have been accomplished sometime this morning. Radio communications and paging of police, fire, and EMS responders were not affected. The Sheriff?s emergency communications vehicle, equipped with satellite telephone and radio dispatching capability, was deployed and manned throughout the night to provide some redundancy in communications while crews worked to restore full telephone services. Citizens are asked to avoid making non-emergency calls to the Sheriff?s Office this morning while repair work continues.
