If we had known then what we know now . . . Asbestos is a very durable, flame retardant, insulator material that has been commonly used in construction for decades. In recent years, however, it has also been discovered to cause serious respiratory ailments including certain types of cancer. Because of today's knowledge of the health risks of asbestos, it is now forbidden. Existing structures containing asbestos, however, must undergo asbestos inspections in Sydney and the greater New South Wales area, in order to ascertain whether or not the presence of asbestos within the structure is of a potentially harmful form.
Asbestos was used in Australia up until a government mandate forbidding future use which was issued on December 31, 2003. Any structure built prior to this new regulation requires asbestos inspection in order to determine possible health risks and whether the necessity of asbestos removal exists. While a homeowner may choose to pursue asbestos inspections in Sydney for the purpose of personal health and peace of mind, commercial interests should be concerned with the health risks posed by the presence of asbestos within their structures, which can imminently affect occupants thereof.
That said, there are certain applications in which asbestos was commonly used that do not readily pose any threat of exposure.
